BBQ Bean Burgers

BBQ Bean Burgers

We are only a few days away from homes being filled with family and friends to celebrate the biggest football game of the year. Looking back I think one reason our Super Bowl party was such a big deal was that it was really one of the last big get-togethers that we had before the holidays came back around in the Fall. It was our way of ringing in the Springtime with the ones we cared about most. And at our party it did not matter how cold or warm it was in February, we were going to be grilling burgers.

I think my dad took great pride in being able to come back from the grill with something warm that we could all enjoy while watching the big game. And that is why I decided to make one of my dad’s all-time favorite meals, my BBQ Bean Burgers. If you happen to find yourself in Northern Indiana and stumble upon this 60-year-old vegan, there is a pretty good chance he is going to want to talk about bean burgers. I truly think that these burgers have helped more than anything else in my father’s transition to a plant-based diet. These burgers cook great on the grill and just as well in the oven.

Most of my past vegan burgers have been made on the grill, so for this recipe, I wanted to give the full tutorial for cooking bean burgers in the oven. My favorite toppings for these burgers are some green leaf lettuce, freshly sliced tomato, ketchup, and a bit of mustard.

If you go ahead and try this recipe, let me know what you think and share a picture on my Instagram and Facebook page of how it turned out!

Description

Making your own BBQ bean burgers can be done with just a few minutes and cooked in the oven in a few short minutes.

Scale

Ingredients

1 cup baked beans

1 cup brown rice (cooked)

1 cup rolled oats

1/4 cup whole-wheat or gluten-free flour

1 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp onion powder

Instructions

  1. Add the beans to an electric stand mixer or into a large bowl. Mix by hand or with the stand mixer on low-medium speed using a scraper paddle attachment for 1-2 minutes.

  2. Add the rest of the ingredients to the beans and mix by hand or with the stand mixer on low-medium speed for 3-5 minutes.

  3. Form the mixture into patties and then place them onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 25 minutes.

Notes

This recipe can also be grilled: Get your grill very hot (450 F+). Grill on each side for 3-5 minutes (waiting to flip the first time until the burgers release easily from the grill).
